October Visiting Jurist: Hon. Raymond Lohier (2d Cir.)

Judge Raymond Lohier, Jr. in the Atrium

Several times each year, the “Visiting Jurist Series” brings a distinguished judge to campus for an informal presentation — more like a conversation than a lecture — on a topic of the judge’s choosing. The presentation is in the Atrium and open to the entire student body.   Following the presentation, the judge stays for dinner with a small group of faculty and students.

The September Visiting Jurist was United States District Judge Vincent Briccetti, newly appointed to the Southern District of New York and sitting in White Plains.  The October Visiting Jurist, who visited this week, was Judge Raymond Lohier of the United States Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit.  Judge Lohier is also relatively new to the bench, having been nominated to fill the seat previously occupied by Justice Sonia Sotomayor (who herself was a Visiting Jurist in 2002).  Visiting Jurist Series has become an institution at St. John’s, thanks to the dedicated efforts of Professors John Barrett and Jerry Todres.  Over the past ten years, the series has brought approximately sixty federal judges to St. John’s for these evenings of conversation and education.
